What Apps DBA's are doing everyday? To figure it out, first let us make it clear, how many roles there are for oracle ERP.

I classify them into four categories:

Functional Consultant

- who focuses on business processed analysis, solution making, system implementation, system testing and user training, etc.

Technical Consultant

- who focuses on business requirement analysis, function extension, reports/forms/workflows/Jsps development and testing etc.

System Adminstrator/Application Developer

- who focuses on front end setups, such as profile options, printer related setups, concurrent programs, users and responsibilities, lots of tasks.

Apps DBA

What roles an apps dba is acting as? It's easy to answer but hard to understand. Generally speaking, two things:

-- Maintain Oracle Database System

-- Maintain Oracle Applications File System

So what activities there are involved in these roles? Generally, it includes Oracle Database and E-business Suite Installations, upgrading, maintenace. As for above tasks, there so many things to understand. I will be explaining some basic skills and common activities in the coming days as below:

-- How to install Oracle E-business Suite

-- How to apply a patch using adpatch or Opatch

-- How to manage Oracle Applications Services

-- How to clone an instance by using Rapid Clone

-- How to use ad utilities for system maintenance

-- How to log a SR (Tar) with Oracle Support

-- Basic Sysadmin skills for Apps DBA

-- Trouble shooting and Diagnostics
