GOAL
Have a 12c database installed and when the sys and system users were created, they were assigned to the default profile so they have an expiration date. Historically, the sys account has never expired. What is the best practice for managing the sys and system users? If the sys user password expires how to connect to reset it?
SOLUTION
Best practice for managing the sys and system users:
From RDBMS 12cR2, it would be supporting Password Life Cycle management, including Password Complexity check for SYS and other administrative users.
For earlier releases, oracle uses OID/LDAP authentication for Administrative users, that could leverage Password Complexity Check functionality in the OID.
If the sys user password expires how to you connect to reset it?
1. Use "orapwd" utility which may help in resetting an expired SYS password
2. alternately, run "sqlplus / as sysdba" to login to sqlplus and reset both sys and system password.
