pwd ----- print the present (working) directory
ls ----- list a directory's contents
mkdir ----- make a directory
rmdir ----- remove a directory
rm ----- remove a file or a number of files
mv ----- rename/move a directory or file
cp ----- copy a file
cat ----- display a file
file ----- display the file type (eg, ascii text)
