PURPOSE
-------

How to find the highest undo segment that has been onlined in your database.

SCOPE & APPLICATION
-------------------

This article is intended for database administrators who need to find out
the highest undo segment number used for a database.

Without the database available and open, you can't query the dictionary to
find out the names of the undo segments. With SMU/AUM the names of them are
system generated on the format _SYSSMUx$ where x is the undo segment number.

Assuming that the database is down, and you need to find this information
ie. to force the database open in cooperation with Oracle Support.

HOW TO FIND THE HIGHEST UNDO SEGMENT NUMBER
-------------------------------------------

On UNIX:
grep -i "undo segment" alert.log | sort | uniq

On Windows:
Open the alert.log in an editor. Search for "Undo Segment 10".
Each time you get a match, increase the segment number and continue the search.
When you don't get any more matches, you know the highest undo segment number.
